How to get a
CDL?

What is needed to get a commercial CDL driver's license for people who have used the U4U program ("Unite for Ukraine") and are in the United States:

1. Get a medical certificate

Obtain a medical certificate of compliance with the requirements necessary to obtain a CDL. You can find a list of CDL medical facilities in your area at https://dcontrol.com/profiles/dot-exam

2. Contact the Social Security Administration

Obtain a Social Security number or contact the Social Security Administration and request a letter of refusal to obtain a Social Security number. With this letter, the Social Security Office is confirming that you have applied for a Social Security number but have been denied. This document is enough to allow you to get a permit (CLP).

3. Contact your local DMV

Contact your local DMV office and provide the following documents:

  • Driver’s license
  • Rejection letter from the Social Security Office
  • CDL medical certificate
  • Form I-94
  • Passport

4. Get a CLP (Commercial License Permit)

You must pass an exam at your local DMV and obtain a CLP (Commercial License Permit). This permit entitles you to drive a truck on public roads, in the presence of an instructor or a person with a valid CDL.

If you want to get a Class A CDL, you will need to pass the following tests at your local DMV to get your CLP: General Knowledge Test, Air brakes Test, and Combination Vehicle Test.

You can take free online tests that will help you test your knowledge and prepare for taking the tests at your local DMV.

If you will not be driving a vehicle with air brakes, you will not need to take the CDL Air Brakes test.

Also, if you will not drive a combination vehicle (trailer and trailer), you will not need to take the CDL Combination Vehicle Test.

5. Complete training at a CDL school

Apply to a CDL school to take the theory test as well as take practical truck driving lessons to gain the skills you need to pass your CDL test.

In our school you will learn all the basic driving skills that are necessary for a successful СDL exam and further career as a driver.
