CBP Reports Arresting 95 CDL Holders in Yuma: What Is Known

Customs and Border Protection

Під час тієї самої operation agents також повідомили про два human-smuggling events, arrest чотирьох alleged smugglers і 17 smuggled people, а також seizure одного firearm, 74 pounds of methamphetamine та 169 pounds of marijuana.

IN ENGLISH

What CBP reported

On August 31, U.S. Customs and Border Protection announced the results of a multi-agency operation with local Stonegarden law-enforcement partners in Yuma, Arizona, conducted August 10–14, 2026. The agency said 143 people from 18 countries were arrested. CBP described 95 of them as “illegal alien truck drivers” who possessed state-issued commercial driver’s licenses. That is CBP’s official characterization; the release does not provide individual case records, court findings or a separate account of each person’s immigration status.

Which states issued the CDLs

CBP said California issued 76 of the 95 CDLs, New York issued six, and 13 came from other states not identified in the release. The arrest of a holder does not by itself establish that a CDL was fraudulent, improperly issued, suspended or expired. CBP did not announce that state DMVs had canceled the credentials. A valid CDL, immigration status and employment authorization are separate legal questions that may involve different documents and verification procedures.

The smuggling arrests and drug seizures were separate results

During the same operation, agents also reported two human-smuggling events, the arrest of four alleged smugglers and encounters with 17 smuggled people, along with the seizure of one firearm, 74 pounds of methamphetamine and 169 pounds of marijuana. The official release does not link those smuggling incidents, the firearm or the drugs to the group of 95 CDL holders. It would therefore be inaccurate to portray all arrested drivers as smugglers or participants in drug trafficking without additional evidence.

What the announcement does not establish

CBP did not say whether every one of the 95 holders was operating a commercial vehicle at the time of arrest, identify an employer or carrier, state whether the CDLs were domiciled or non-domiciled, specify criminal charges, confirm removal proceedings or provide a final case outcome. An immigration arrest or administrative detention is not a criminal conviction. Any later licensing, employment or immigration consequences depend on individual facts and decisions by the relevant agencies or courts.

Practical implications for Ukrainian drivers

This operation does not create a new CDL rule or automatically cancel other drivers’ credentials. Before a trip through a border region, a Ukrainian driver should verify the status and expiration of the CDL, medical certification, work authorization and any I-94, EAD or visa documents relevant to the individual situation; make sure names and dates are consistent across records; and keep contact information for a qualified immigration attorney in case of detention or a document dispute. U4U parole, TPS or an EAD should not be conflated with FMCSA’s separate rules for issuing or renewing a non-domiciled CDL.
